FAQ

What are roof tile battens used for?

Roof tile battens are horizontal strips of wood used in roofing systems to support roof tiles. They create a framework that helps secure the tiles in place and helps distribute the weight of the tiles evenly across the roof structure, reducing the risk of damage and ensuring a longer lifespan for the roof. Additionally, they can assist in waterproofing by creating a gap between the tiles and the roof underlayment, allowing for better moisture management.

What are your roof tile battens made from?

Our battens are made from radiata pine timber. This is a popular choice due to the combination of strength, affordability and versatility. Pine is lightweight yet sturdy, making it easy to handle and install whilst providing reliable support for roof tiles.

Are your roof tile battens treated?

Standard roof tile battens are left untreated.  Roofing systems are generally designed to allow for adequate ventilation and draining which reduces the risk of moisture buildup, making treatment unnecessary in this low-moisture environment. Untreated timber is more cost-effective than treated timber.

We can organise and supply treated battens as required.

Are your roof tile battens responsibly sourced?

Yes. Capital Battens has a responsible wood sourcing policy that ensures we only accept wood from well-managed forests that prioritise environmental health and biodiversity.

Wood supply from certified suppliers is prioritised (such certifications as the Forests Stewardship Council FSC or the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification PEFC).

How strong are your roof tile battens?

Our roof tile battens undergo a visual inspection that assess them against F5 structural standards in accordance with AS2858.
